Tonya migrated to Canada in 2015 and settled in the Yorkville neighbourhood of Toronto. She found it difficult finding quality hair extensions and wigs at the time. She frequently had to order from businesses in the United States which resulted in high duties, currency conversion, taxes and fees.

Hair styling wasn’t Tonya’s profession, rather it was a hidden talent that she acquired over the years while working in the fashion industry: “I would do my hair and go out and people would come up to me asking ‘who’s your hairstylist?’ or ‘where did you get your hair from?‘’.

Tonya saw that as an opportunity to help others and decided to pursue an education in cosmetology: ‘’I didn’t want to enter the market without any knowledge of the hair industry; I wanted to enter as a professional”.

After finishing school and through trial and error, Tonya figured out a way to offer the convenience of ordering hair extensions and wigs to people of all price points, and that’s how Tresses by Tonya was born!
